UFC 317 has lost a fight after a debutant was cut from the roster following a major weight miss just ahead of his International Fight Week debut.
While Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira made weight without issue for the top of the card, the same can’t be said for the bout that was supposed to open the night.
Christopher Ewert, who stepped in on short notice, didn’t make it to the scales – and was soon out of a job.
Christopher Ewert cut after missing weight for UFC debut
Initially, Jackson McVey was booked to step in for Sedriques Dumas, who had pulled out earlier in the week due to a legal matter. To replace the fighter from Pensacola, Florida, the UFC turned to Ewert, who was set to make his debut for the world’s biggest MMA brand.
However, while McVey successfully made weight at 185lbs, Ewert did not show up. According to Dan Hellie, he was reportedly 10 pounds over the middleweight limit. In response, the UFC acted quickly.

Jon Anik later announced during the official weigh-in show that Ewert had been released by the promotion.
With no opponent left for International Fight Week, the organisation cancelled McVey’s bout. The Moose will now have to wait a little longer to make his UFC debut.
