So far this season, Arsenal appear to be a different team under Mikel Arteta, and qualification for the Champions League seems very likely indeed.
The Gunners beat Wolves by two goals to one last night, thanks to a 95th minute own goal from José Sa which moved Arsenal into fifth.
Now, they are just one point off Manchester United in fourth, with two games in hand under their belt.
However, the Champions League could return to the Emirates Stadium even sooner, in what could be an embarrassing situation for Arsenal.
What’s the story?
Well, after Russia launched a “full-scale invasion” of Ukraine, UEFA have decided to move the Champions League final away from St Petersburg.
The showpiece event was meant to be held at the Gazprom Stadium, but now, according to Sky Sports, it could be played at the Emirates Stadium.
So, what’s embarrassing about the situation for Arsenal?
As things stand, nothing is. However, if one of their Premier League rivals reached the final, and went on to lift the Champions League on Arsenal soil, it would be quite humiliating for the Gunners.
Arsenal haven’t taken part in the Champions League since 2017, and it would certainly be quite humbling if a Premier League rival won Europe’s greatest club competition at the Emirates Stadium.
With Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea all looking likely to reach the quarter-final, it’s certainly a possibility.
Arsenal must reach the Champions League
Regardless of where the Champions League final is held, or who wins the competition this season, Arsenal have to finish in the top four this term.
It would be a huge blow for Mikel Arteta and his project if Arsenal have to spend another season either in the Europe League, or out of Europe completely.
It doesn’t help Arsenal lure transfer targets to north London, while it could also see star players leave in search of Champions League football.
Arsenal are a huge club, and they must prove that by finally returning to the Champions League with a top four finish this season.
