AC Milan are now reportedly working on renewing Pierre Kalulu’s contract just days after reports emerged that Newcastle United wanted to sign the 22-year-old defender.

According to CalcioMercato, the reigning Serie A champions are hopeful of tying the French wonderkid down to a new contract after CalcioMercatoWeb reported that Newcastle were keeping tabs on Kalulu, who is regarded by many as one of the best defensive talents in all of Serie A.

With a reported price tag of £26m, Kalulu would be quite the steal for Newcastle and would follow a trend of signings made by Eddie Howe after the arrivals of Alexander Isak, Sven Botman and Bruno Guimaraes, three young players with fantastic reputations on the continent.

Whilst the Magpies’ defensive record has been impressive this season, signing Kalulu would be quite the coup for Newcastle. However, this latest report from Italy could stop the Toon right in their tracks before a transfer saga could even develop.

Indeed, Kalulu has developed into quite the talent for Milan since joining in 2020 from Olympique Lyonnais, with the defender proving to be a versatile option for Stefan Pioli at centre-back and even in midfield. And now, the Rossoneri want to reward the 22-year-old.

Whilst there is interest from Newcastle and PSG as per CalcioMercato, Kalulu staying with Milan makes a lot of sense for the French youth international, who is only going from strength to strength with the Italian giants, with the club themselves potentially in the money with the youngster for the defender in the future.

Newcastle’s endless wealth under their PIF owners has been well-reported for the best part of a year. And as a result, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if the Magpies return for Kalulu if the defender signs a new contract with Milan.

After all, Newcastle’s central defence could do with a young option like Kalulu to partner Botman. And with the centre-back likely to renew with Milan in the coming weeks, there’s a good chance that the Premier League side could move for the Frenchman in the years to come.
