The Bournemouth defender experienced an eventful game against Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Bournemouth battled admirably with ten men for the majority of their Saturday lunchtime Premier League encounter with Manchester United, although, in comparison to the sub-narrative of the game’s proceedings, the result – a 1-1 draw – will not live long in the memory.
It was the home side who took the lead in the 23rd minute, courtesy of Marcos Rojo’s first United goal – before former United forward Joshua King converted a 40th-minute penalty to bring the scoreline level.
However, the encounter’s main flash points occurred shortly after the Bournemouth equaliser. On the brink of half time a fluster of United and Bournemouth players found themselves tumbling to the floor following an innocuous coming together.
In the aftermath, Bournemouth’s Tyrone Mings appeared to jump over United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic – only to land on the talisman’s head in an ugly-looking apparent stamp.
Moments later, in the midst of a United corner, Mings and Ibrahimovic clashed once again – with the latter elbowing the Cherries’ defender.
Whereas the assumption amongst pundits and many observers is that both players deserved a red card for their respective antics, the reality of the situation was that neither were dismissed from the field.
In fact, it was Mings’ teammate, midfielder Andrew Surman, who was sent off – after his push on Ibrahimovic, who uncharacteristically blew the chance to give United the win with a second half penalty miss, warranted a second yellow card.
Despite the plethora of criticisms towards Mings in particular, there were many who took to social networking site Twitter to express their views that Mings’ intentions were perhaps not so malicious as many believe.
