Manchester City are reportedly leading the race to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, with Liverpool and Manchester United also keen.

According to the Daily Star, the Premier League champions believe they hold the edge over the competition for the Uruguay international in large part to their relationship with the Portuguese side.

City have made two blockbuster deals with Benfica in recent years. Ederson Moraes and Ruben Dias both joined the Manchester giants and have established themselves as key players under Pep Guardiola.

And if reports are to be believed, Nunez could be the latest name to make the move from Lisbon to Manchester. The striker has started the season in impressive form for Benfica, with the attacker netting six goals in seven appearances in all competitions.

Indeed, with Nunez only just joining Benfica this summer from UD Almeria, Jorge Jesus’ side will be reluctant to sell their new star attacker. However, with City reportedly willing to go big on Nunez, a deal could be done.

City fans beg for Haaland over Nunez

As per the report, Nunez has a £125m release clause. But Benfica would be willing to lower this down to the region of £70m if City were to enter talks. However, fans on social media are fuming about the news.

With Erling Haaland available at a similar price next summer, Man City fans are desperate for the Norwegian striker to join ahead of Nunez.

Here’s what some City fans had to say on Twitter about their reported interested in Nunez…
