The Spaniard was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur but Barcelona will be thankful he stayed after their Champions League heroics.
Any football fan watching Barcelona’s stunning comeback against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening would have been forgiven for falling to their knees in excitement, but Tottenham Hotspur fans may have taken a moment to think what might have been.
After all, as reported by the Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo back in 2015, Tottenham were very interested in bringing Barca’s match-winner Sergi Roberto to White Hart Lane.
The report claimed Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino had identified Roberto as a perfect addition to the North London club’s midfield but that Valencia were also circling.
The player’s lack of game time at Barcelona was allegedly attracting interest from elsewhere but in the end the player remained at the Nou Camp and the rest is history.
Tottenham have not done too badly despite failing to sign Roberto, with their right-back and central midfield options plentiful and their position in the Premier League suggesting that Pochettino is doing just fine.
But one wonders what would have happened if Tottenham had convinced Barcelona to do a deal for a player who, just last night, wrote himself into Champions League folklore.
