West Ham United could revolutionise their midfield this summer.
West Ham United tied up another new signing today as Jack Wilshere arrived on a free transfer from Arsenal, but more deals are expected at the London Stadium.
The Hammers had already brought in Lukasz Fabianski, Ryan Fredericks and Issa Diop, whilst Fabian Balbuena and Andriy Yarmolenko also look set to arrive this week.
The attention may quickly turn to outgoings, but with Sky Sports reporting that West Ham are open to offloading both Cheikhou Kouyate and Pedro Obiang, at least one more midfielder would be needed.
Wilshere’s dismal injury record could leave West Ham short at some point, especially if Kouyate and Obiang both go, which would leave a lot of responsibility on Mark Noble in midfield.
New manager Manuel Pellegrini may well look to bring in another midfielder, and The Sun reported on Sunday that he wants to lure Malaga captain Recio to the London Stadium this summer.
Recio, 27, has come up through the ranks with Malaga having been born there, and he now skippers the side having made close to 150 league appearances for the Andalusians.
Recio has not only featured under Pellegrini for Malaga, but West Ham’s director of football Mario Husillos has always worked closely with the Spaniard, and he may represent the ideal signing for West Ham.
Recio is of a good age, shouldn’t break the banks, knows how to play under Pellegrini and is a good passer of the ball, and could be a reliable player for Pellegrini to call upon should Obiang and Kouyate leave – or if Wilshere’s injury record haunts him again.
