Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports during their live coverage of Aston Villa’s win against Newcastle that Jack Grealish and Ross Barkley would have been ‘muttering’ their discontent on the bench for being substituted during that match.
The former defender joked that the Villa duo would have been saying ‘the manager doesn’t know what he’s doing’ after Grealish, especially, was a surprise sub with minutes left on the clock last night.
When Grealish’s number came up, he looked pretty distraught when coming off and that mood didn’t change when he was sat on the bench, which was hilarious viewing for the supporters.
Carragher shared his thoughts on Grealish’s brilliant reaction to being subbed yesterday.
“Well, he has played well and got an assist,” said Carragher. “He can go sit right next to Ross Barkley and two of them will be muttering saying ‘the manager doesn’t know what he’s doing. What’s he doing taking us off?’
“He’ll be alright when he gets back to the dressing room. Another three points for them.
On Grealish then looking distraught on the bench: “He’s like Muttley there.”

Grealish provided yet another assist for Dean Smith’s men against a pretty lacklustre and confidence-drained Newcastle side.
The speed and flair in which Villa played did drop a level during the second period but they were still comfortable for the entirety of the match.
After a long break because of a COVID outbreak in the Villa camp, the players will be back at it again on Wednesday night when they take on Burnley.
