City topped a tough-looking Group A with 12 points, finishing one point above runners-up PSG.

They won four of their six matches, losing the other two, although their status as group winners had already been confirmed before they were downed by RB Leipzig in Germany on Tuesday.

A number of star men stepped up for Pep Guardiola across the six-match schedule, with Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling amongst those in good form in front of goal.

However, it was Joao Cancelo and Riyad Mahrez who made it into WhoScored.com’s best XI of the group stages.

Mahrez netted a remarkable five times in six appearances and while City failed to keep a clean sheet, full-back Cancelo scored twice and notched three assists.

The Portuguese achieved an average rating of 7.94, while his Algerian teammate scored slightly lower at 7.88.

Both ratings compare favourably with most others in the XI, though, and there was only one other Premier League club representative included – Chelsea’s Reece James (7.49).

Two players who failed to shine in England but are now thriving elsewhere, Sebastian Coates (7.42) and Sebastien Haller (8.48) also made the cut, as did ex-City star Leroy Sane.

The Citizens now face a nervous wait until Monday when they will find out who they’ll face in the Champions League Last 16.

First up is a home Premier League clash against Wolves on Saturday, though, as they look to stretch their advantage at the top of the table.
