Liverpool defeated Aston Villa 2-0 on Saturday, with two of their players standing out when it came to accurate passes.
Liverpool are enjoying a wonderful start to 2015 and their latest victory – a 2-0 win against Aston Villa – even saw two of their less than prolific forwards get on the score-sheet in the form of Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert.
But it was two other players who impressed with simple but highly effective performances, seeing them both earn a place in the top three for the weekend’s best Premier League pass-masters.
Lucas Leiva’s return to Liverpool’s first-team has been timely to say the least, his presence ensuring the Reds have gone on a fine streak that could continue for some time to come. On Saturday the Brazilian played 73 accurate passes – more than any other player in the English top flight this weekend – while Henderson was third with 69 passes.
Separating them was Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis who racked up 71 passes, but centre-backs are generally put under far less pressure than midfielders, a fact which makes the Liverpool duo’s latest achievement all the more impressive.
| Accurate Pass | |
|---|---|
| Lucas Leiva | 73 |
| Martín Demichelis | 71 |
| Jordan Henderson | 69 |
Liverpool are currently eighth in the Premier League and such has been their recent form – and the improved form of some of their summer additions – that there is no telling where they could end up.
Wherever it is, they will surely owe much to the continued good form of Lucas and Henderson – two of the best and most underrated midfielders in England.
