Leeds United had their best game in 2015 in two areas last night, which are vital for any defence in the Championship.

Leeds were superb in terms of the number of interceptions made by all players and the number of aerial duels they won over the course of their 2-1 victory against Ipswich.

The numbers should be extremely encouraging to Neil Redfearn, who would have been left questioning his side’s defence after the 3-2 defeat against Watford last weekend.

Leeds did concede last night and were saved by Marco Silvestri who turned a penalty around the post, but it’s evidence of form and improvement in key areas.

The interceptions stat is significant because it shows a brilliant ability in the current side to read the game effectively.

If Leeds’ players can get into positions where they can intercept frequently, they can cut out danger before it develops into something more serious and maintain pressure higher up the pitch.

Aerially the stats suggest that Leeds have become a very difficult side to take advantage of over the top and if they can maintain their effectiveness in this area, they are reducing the number of ways they can be attacked.
