Countless names have been tried, and even this season they are still short of where they want to be.
Two players they probably won’t be calling on is a couple of striker they have tried to work with before, despite their battles to try and find new clubs.
Both Emmanuel Emenike and Modibo Maiga find themselves without clubs despite the transfer window being closed.
Emenike had a spell at West Ham in 2016 on loan from Fenerbahce.
The Nigerian striker scored twice in the FA Cup for West Ham but failed to score once in 13 Premier League games and the Hammers were not convinced enough to sign him.
After his West Ham spell, Emenike was sold to Olympiakos.
He flopped at the Greek side despite impressing early with two goals against Celtic in Champions League qualifiers, and was loaned out to Las Palmas, again without success.
Now a free agent, the 31-year-old is looking for another chance to take a chance on him.
Modibo Maiga has had a nomadic career since leaving West Ham in 2015.
He has been playing in the Middle East, most recently for UAE side Ajman Club.
Maiga had more success here, scoring 10 goals in 19 games last season now finds himself as a free agent.
Neither player worked out at West Ham, not through lack of trying, but they were not the answer.
Their travails since have not done anything to convince the Hammers they were wrong not to keep them around, despite their own struggles.
