Newcastle United have seen Callum Wilson impress in the early stages of his Magpies career, but you could forgive fans for still being a little annoyed at a couple of sales in recent times.
In the summer of 2018, Newcastle decided to sell two young attackers, allowing them to leave for moves into the Football League.
Ivan Toney was sold on to Peterborough United for around £650,000 in August 2018, with Newcastle making a £400,000 profit on the former Northampton Town talent.
Newcastle also moved on Adam Armstrong, selling the homegrown striker to Blackburn Rovers in a deal worth an initial £1.75million.
Letting either player go wasn’t really a big deal at the time, but bringing in just over £2million for the duo now looks to be a little bit of a mistake.
Toney has since joined Brentford for £10million having smashed 49 goals in 94 games for Peterborough, and he’s off to a hot start at Brentford with 10 goals in 13 appearances.
As for Armstrong, he’s starring too; he has 12 goals in 12 games this season, having racked up 17 for Rovers last season.
At 23 and 24 respectively, Armstrong and Toney appear to have their best years ahead of them, and they now sit top of the Championship scoring charts with 21 league goals combined already this term.
It would cost much, much more to buy them back now, and Newcastle – who have seen Joelinton struggle for goals since arriving for around 20 times the price they sold Armstrong and Toney for – may just have some regrets.
