Derby County’s new signing is already ahead of the club’s current defensive options in two key areas.

The BBC recently confirmed Derby County’s move for 26-year-old defender Raul Albentosa from La Liga side Eibar.

It’s a deal which might leave some Rams supporters scratching their heads over the logic considering some of the talented individuals the side could have gone after from the Championship.

However, there is method and logic behind Derby’s and Steve McClaren’s thinking because Albentosa is better than Derby’s current defensive options in two areas this season; interceptions and aerial duels won per game.

According to whoscored.com, the Spaniard has performed better in terms of interceptions (2.9 per game this season) and aerial duels (3.6 won per game this season) when compared with the stats his new teammates have managed in the current campaign.

The interceptions stat is significant because it shows an intelligence in terms of reading the game and enhances Derby’s ability to play with a higher defensive line.

The aerial duels won per game is also significant because it enhances Derby’s ability to deal with any aerial threat coming from the opposition, meaning he should help cut out a main tactic for opposition sides to hurt the team.

All in all, it seems like a great capture by the club.
