Wales picked up their seventh point of their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign as they drew 0-0 away at the Republic of Ireland on Friday.
Chris Coleman’s men haven’t quite hit the heights of their Euro 2016 campaign as they bid to make it to Russia in 2018, and it’s still just one win in the World Cup qualifiers.
On Friday, they played out a cagey encounter with Ireland, with neither side really displaying the necessary attacking threat to claim all three points at the Aviva Stadium.
Gareth Bale was a threat throughout for Wales, playing an outstanding pass for Neil Taylor, only for the Aston Villa left back to miscontrol the ball, before the Real Madrid winger sent a long-range strike fizzing past the post.
Ireland struggled going forward, and the main talking point from the game featured Taylor, as he was given a straight red card for a nasty foul on Seamus Coleman, which appeared to break the Everton full back’s leg.
Wales will have been pleased with a point and a clean sheet though, with Tottenham’s Ben Davies again playing an important role as a makeshift centre back.
Wales’ Ben Davies
Whilst Davies plays at left back for Spurs, and has been starting in place of the injured Danny Rose in recent weeks, he often plays as a left-sided centre back in Chris Coleman’s 5-3-2 system with Wales.
Davies was solid throughout, with fans taking to Twitter to praise his performance, hailing him as one of the best Wales players during this qualifying campaign to date.
Others believe that Davies would actually offer more than Taylor at left wing back, urging Coleman to reconsider his selection in future.
