Leeds are reported to be considering signing Matthew Pennington from Everton.

Not many players get the chance to work with Marcelo Bielsa so if Matthew Pennington does indeed get a second go at Leeds United, he should jump at it.

Surplus to requirements at Everton this season, Pennington is being linked with a return to Elland Road by the Liverpool Echo.

Leeds lack options defensively and on loan, Pennington would be able to settle quickly at the club ahead of this weekend’s season kick off.

There is no getting away from the fact that Pennington would be an underwhelming signing for Leeds, and it does look a bit of a panic move at this late stage of the transfer window.

Are there better options around, even on loan from Premier League clubs? Probably.

Yet if Bielsa sanctions the switch, he must see some potential in the Everton defender.

Pennington actually started off last season promisingly in the first game for Leeds before picking up an injury.

He made sporadic appearances after that under Thomas Christiansen, but looked lost under Paul Heckingbottom in the second half of the season, as did half the squad.

Calls for Pennington to sign permanently evaporated, and the defender looked devoid of confidence and quality.

It is not impossible by any means, but if Marcelo Bielsa can get him back to his best, it will represent his biggest success story at Leeds of all his signings, as Whites fans have already seen the low end of the spectrum in terms of what Pennington can produce.

Expectation will be low, so if Bielsa can turn him around, it will really highlight his coaching ability.
