Wigan Athletic lost 2-1 at home to Leeds United.

Wigan Athletic forward Callum McManaman says Leeds United are the best side the Latics have faced this season as the Whites secured a 2-1 victory at the DW Stadium, Wiganathletic.com report.

“Leeds are a good side. Probably the best we have played, but I think it is at least a point dropped having been 1-0 up,” McManaman explained.

Wigan boss Paul Cook echoed his player’s thoughts, also praising Leeds United when speaking to the club’s official website: “You have to be fair and say Leeds carried a threat all game and they were excellent at times, especially with the pace and movement of their forward players”

Wigan headed into the clash against Leeds coming off the back of a 4-2 defeat at Sheffield United – the side who replaced the Whites at the top of the table following Leeds’ 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

The Latics got off to the perfect start as Reece James fired them into an early lead after just six minutes. However, Wigan’s joy didn’t last long as Pablo Hernandez immediately found an equaliser.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side then started to ramp up the pressure and control proceedings, and they finally got their noses in-front as striker Kemar Roofe netted in the second period.

Wigan had a good chance to level late on via McManaman, but the former West Bromwich Albion man fired over when well positioned and Leeds saw out the game to collect all three points and return to the top of the table.

On reflection, it was a deserved victory for Leeds as they took 12 shots to Wigan’s six, dominated possession with 67% of the ball and their pass success rate was much higher at 78% (Whoscored).

The Yorkshire side’s supporters can feel proud after hearing McManaman’s comments with Wigan having already played promotion rivals Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest, West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City.
