Wigan Athletic signed Charlie Mulgrew on loan from Blackburn Rovers.

Wigan Athletic defender Sam Morsy says he was surprised Lancashire rivals Blackburn Rovers allowed Charlie Mulgrew to move to the DW Stadium on loan during the summer, Wigan Post report.
“If you’re looking at someone who’s going to come in and provide so many assists and goals…he’s like a £10million attacking midfielder!” Morsy said of Charlie Mulgrew.
“Defensively, too, he’s been top class…I was surprised Blackburn were prepared to let him go. With his all-round performance, presence about the place he’s been a fantastic signing.”
Mulgrew joined Blackburn in 2016-17, and he quickly established himself as a regular at Ewood Park, making 99 league appearances including 30 in the Championship last season.
The 33-year-old is versatile. He can play at centre-back, left back and occasionally in midfield. But, despite his defensive nature, Mulgrew is excellent at set-pieces. Last season, he scored ten league goals for Rovers.
Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray regularly played Mulgrew last season, but the arrivals of Tosin Adarabioyo and Greg Cunningham on loan increased competition for places at the back.

Wigan ultimately signed the former Celtic man on a season-long loan deal. It was a surprise deadline day move considering Mulgrew played the full 90 minutes of Blackburn’s opening game against Charlton Athletic.
Mulgrew has since made three starts for the Latics and provided an assist in the win over Charlton at the weekend.
