Why Real Madrid’s ‘sad’ star is Chelsea’s long-term solution

With Chelsea needing a new left-back this summer, perhaps Jose Mourinho should take advantage of Real Madrid’s situation and sign Marcelo.

Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole could be set for a Stamford Bridge exit this summer leaving the Blues without a recognised left-back.

Spanish fullback Cesar Azpilicueta has filled in on many occasions throughout the season, but the 24-year-old is predominantly a right-back and it has become a problem area for Jose Mourinho all season.

With Luke Shaw attracting the attentions of a number of clubs, perhaps Mourinho would be more prudent going back to Real Madrid and taking advantage of Marcelo’s current dilemma.

The Brazilian left-back has been the number one choice for large periods of the season due to the injury of teammate Fabio Coentrao.

Coentrao, however, has since returned to action and is believed to have won over boss Carlo Ancelotti.

The 26-year-old Portuguese international was favoured by the Italian boss for Real’s recent Champions League clashes against Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich as well as the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.

Coentrao has made such a positive impact, that Real are reportedly set to offer the star a new deal in a bid to end speculation linking him with an exit from the Santiago Bernabeu.

As for Marcelo, the Brazilian admitted in a recent interview with the Spanish press that he feels upset when being left out.

“I’m OK, I’m available to help them team. I always want to play, whether it’s a friendly match or official. When I don’t, it’s normal that I’m bored and sad, but that’s up to the boss,” he said, quoted by Futbol Total.

Marcelo then spoke of his first-team battle with Coentrao.

“Competing with Coentrao is good for Madrid,” he said. “In Madrid, things for me have never been easy. He is a fantastic player and we are both fighting to play, but I always want to play.”

Mourinho knows all about Marcelo’s capabilities and he favoured the Brazilian over Coentrao while coaching the Spanish giants.

With his contract running out in 2015 and Real also linked with Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno, perhaps the Blues could take advantage of the situation and sign their long-term left-back solution for a cut-price deal.
