Derby County are reportedly keen on signing Brentford’s Florian Jozefzoon.
According to a report from Sky Sports, Derby County are interested in signing Brentford winger Florian Jozefzoon and have seen their opening bid of £1.5 million turned down by the Bees.
The Rams are on the lookout for a new wide player having sold Johnny Russell to MLS side Kansas City in the January transfer window and recently allowing Andreas Weimann to join Bristol City.
It seems a little strange for Derby to sell Weimann to a potential Championship promotion rival and leave themselves with only one natural winger left in the squad.
That said, it was reported that Derby received a fee in the region of £2 million for the former Aston Villa man (Daily Star) and, if they can replace him with Brentford’s Jozefzoon with cash to spare, it would represent a cracking deal.
Weimann was never really a prolific scorer for the Rams and he joined at a time when the club were spending big in their bid for promotion to the Premier League. He was likely on a decent weekly salary.
Jozefzoon, on the other hand, arguably represents a cheaper option in terms of wages while, in his debut campaign for Brentford, he impressed with seven goals and a further seven assists.
With only one year remaining on the 27-year-old’s deal at Griffin Park, Brentford cannot expect to hold out for a sizeable fee and it would be in their best interests to cash in now rather than lose him for free next year.
Derby are in desperate need of freshening up their squad, with newly-appointed boss Frank Lampard looking to change the culture at the club and seemingly move back towards a possession-based style of play.
Jozefzoon would be an ideal fit and, considering his age, he still has the best part of his career ahead of him with the east Midlands club intent on making a long-awaited return to the Premier League.
