Sheffield Wednesday are one of several clubs who are targeting a promotion challenge.
Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith believes his side have a really good chance of challenging for promotion this season despite the club’s quiet business in the transfer market, the Sheffield Star reports.
The Owls finished in a lowly position in the Championship table last season; a huge disappointment having reached the play-offs in the two previous campaigns and spending big in their bid for promotion.
Wednesday’s failure to earn promotion to the Premier League has forced them to make cutbacks this summer, with Jack Hunt and Jordan Rhodes departing the club while nobody has signed as of yet.
Despite their evident shortage of defenders and lack of room to manoeuvre this summer, goalkeeper Wildsmith believes his side are still among the Championship’s best as he talks up Wednesday’s promotion chances.
“I think we have got a really good chance to go for it (promotion) this year. We have got players back who we didn’t have last year so that is always going to strengthen the squad,” he explained.
“There is a good feel around the club at the moment. There is a good connection between the boys. Everyone is getting on and the atmosphere is positive, which I think can only help us be successful.”
Wednesday’s form towards the end of last season was really strong under Dutch boss Jos Luhukay, prompting the club to head into the summer in positive fashion and with excitement for the ensuing campaign.
However, their lack of activity in the transfer market is a worry, and they could still be hoping to get rid of a few more high-earners before being able to bring anyone in.
With teams such as Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and Stoke City spending big and strengthening accordingly, right now reaching a playoff spot next term would represent a success for the Owls.
