Daniel Pudil doesn’t hold back when pinpointing Wednesday’s target next season

Sheffield Wednesday have enjoyed a decent end to the 2017/18 campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday defender Daniel Pudil says the club are gunning for at least a top six spot next season as they set their sights on earning promotion to the Premier League, the Sheffield Star reports.

The Owls have endured a disappointing campaign on the whole, finishing in a lowly mid-table position despite former manager Carlos Carvalhal confidently predicting a top two push last summer.

Wednesday have plenty of quality in their squad, but a horrible run of injuries has prevented them from gaining any momentum and it was not until the last ten games of the season that they finally showed their potential.

Speaking to reporters, defender Daniel Pudil feels his side has one of the strongest squads in the league and believes six wins in their last ten games shows they have what it takes to beat everyone as he eyes promotion.

“I think we have one of the strongest squads in the Championship. We have to push ourselves and the target is at least to be in the top six,” Pudil told the Sheffield Star.

“This is why I came from Watford to get Sheffield Wednesday to the Premier League. This is one of the targets but we know the league is going to be even harder next season – we need to work hard.

“Everyone knows we can do it. We showed in the last 10 games we played well against big teams and I think we can beat everyone. It’s just up to us.”

Wednesday recorded big home wins over the likes of Reading, Norwich City and Preston North End towards the end of the campaign, while also holding Championship winners Wolverhampton Wanderers to a draw at Molineux.

Under the guidance of manager Jos Luhukay, there has been a gradual improvement and, with a bit of backing in the summer, there is no reason why the Owls cannot challenge for promotion to the Premier League next term.

Pudil has recently extended his contract until 2019; therefore next year could be his final shot of earning promotion with the Yorkshire club and perhaps the same can be said for several of his Wednesday teammates, too.
