Wayne Rooney is set to leave Everton and join DC United.
After weeks of speculation, both Everton and DC United have confirmed that Wayne Rooney has finally left Goodison Park to start a new adventure in America’s MLS at the Audi Field.
The 32-year-old re-joined his boyhood club 12 months ago after departing Manchester United, but his second spell at Everton didn’t really go to plan with the club struggling for form in the Premier League.
While Rooney’s presence wasn’t the reason behind Everton’s disappointing campaign last term, his transfer to the club however represented the wrong way to go about trying to break into the top six.
Rather than following in the footsteps of Tottenham Hotspur and building gradually with the purchase of young players with huge potential, Everton spent big on established stars with the hope of an immediate impact.
Gylfi Sigurdsson arrived from Swansea City for a substantial fee but signing Rooney and paying him a whopping £160,000 per week (Spotrac) was madness considering he was only a short-term option.
Everton need to undergo a new direction and invest in potential if they are to break in to the Premier League’s top six. And shipping out the high earners such as Rooney this summer is a positive start.
Under the guidance of newly-appointed boss Marco Silva and director of football Marcel Brands, the Toffees potentially have a long-term partnership in place and youth has already been spoken about.
With Tom Davies, Mason Holgate, Jonjoe Kenny and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the books, the Merseyside club already have a great base to start building the future around. Now they need to add to that.
