Liverpool striker Divock Origi somehow managed to sky an effort over the bar from all of three yards during Lille’s 1-0 win over Evian TG in French Ligue 1.
The Belgian international shot to prominence in Brazil last summer as he became Belgium’s youngest ever World Cup goal scorer with a late winner in the 1-0 Group H victory over Russia.
Subsequent promising displays attracted the interests of Europe’s leading clubs, and it wasn’t long before he was officially announced a Liverpool player, the BBC confirming the £10 million transfer.
As part of the deal, Origi remained in France with previous club Lille on a season-long loan deal in order to gain valuable experience via regular first-team football.
He has featured 26 times in the French top division this season, though his return of just seven goals is hardly mouth-watering and his latest miss did nothing to convince doubters of his grand potential.
With the score-line locked at 0-0, Lille broke the hosts’ backline and the ball was played across the six-yard box for Origi to open the scoring with a simple tap-in.
However, rather extraordinarily, the young striker managed to completely fluff his lines and balloon over from a mere three yards out with the goal gaping.
It was a horrific miss, and one that will surely make the end-of-season highlight reels of the worst misses and biggest blunders across Europe’s biggest leagues.
Fortunately for the Reds’ striker, Lille managed to score a late winner and earn the three points, partly saving his blushes though surely his teammates won’t let him forget his clanger in a hurry.
