Liverpool signed Fabinho, Alisson and Xherdan Shaqiri during the summer.

Jurgen Klopp, Manager of Liverpool looks on during the Premier League match between Liverpool and Chelsea at Anfield on November 25, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

According to a report by the CIES Football Observatory, Liverpool underspent by over £30 million on summer signings Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson.

The Reds went out and spent big in the summer as they look to close the gap on Premier League champions Manchester City, spending over £150 million on four players.

Many have questioned the fees which Liverpool have splashed out on their new acquisitions, yet CIES calculate how they ultimately underpaid, with the report suggesting the selling club should have held out for more.

Fabinho.

Fabinho joined Liverpool from Monaco for a deal which could reach around £50 million, though at the time of his sale he had a ‘fair price’ nearer to £66.5m – largely due to his age and potential.

The natural holding midfielder came off the bench against Paris Saint-Germain to make his competitive debut for the Reds in midweek, and he will soon be hoping to nail down a regular first-team spot at Anfield.

Alisson:

Signing a new number one was a must for Liverpool in the summer, and they certainly didn’t hold back as they brought in Alisson from Roma for what was (momentarily) a world record transfer fee for a goalkeeper.

The Brazil international was said to be signed for around £64 million (CIES report), but he was another player who had a higher fair price with the former Roma man valued at £71 million.

Xherdan Shaqiri:

The third Liverpool player who makes the CIES top 25 most underspent signings across Europe was Shaqiri, who moved to Anfield from Stoke City following the Potters’ relegation to the Championship.

The Switzerland international was said to have signed for around £13 million, but the report claims Stoke should have held out for £20 million with Jurgen Klopp’s side striking a superb deal.
