Tottenham Hotspur’s Christian Eriksen has struggled of late.
Tottenham Hotspur head into their away clash at Newcastle United knowing that a potentially memorable season has slipped through their grasp in recent weeks.
Following an excellent run of form at the start of 2015, Spurs found themselves in contention for a top four spot, while a League Cup final date with Chelsea highlighted their immense improvement.
However, defeat to the Blues at Wembley along with further losses at Liverpool and Manchester United derailed Spurs somewhat and inconsistency has followed.
Over the past six weeks, Mauricio Pochettino’s men have recorded three wins in six Premier League matches and star player Christian Eriksen has ultimately struggled to make an impact.
| Goals | Assists | Shots per Game | Key Passes per Game | Take-ons per Game | Touches per Game | Accurate Passes per Game | Ball Recoveries per Game | Appearances | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Christian Eriksen | 0 | 1 | 2.67 | 1.5 | 1.17 | 73.83 | 42.17 | 4.83 | 6 |
The Danish international has been phenomenal on a number of occasions this season, but as per the table provided by Opta Stats, his form has suffered since that Wembley defeat on 1 March.
Eriksen has not found the net for Spurs since the 3-0 win over West Bromwich Albion at the end of January, and his ability to create chances has dipped markedly.
It has certainly not been for a lack of trying, but Pochettino’s insistence on playing the former Ajax star in a wider role instead of behind striker Harry Kane is doing little to aid his cause.
The 23-year-old has averaged just 1.5 key passes per encounter, and despite taking more than 15 efforts on goal since the start of March, he has failed to force a breakthrough.
The Lilywhites’ drop-off in form has seen them fall to seventh spot in the Premier League table, behind rivals Liverpool and Southampton in the race for a Europa League spot.
In spite of their current position, Spurs’ players can be proud of a progressive campaign – given the circumstances – though leading players such as Eriksen will be looking to finish the season on a high.
