Chelsea’s Kasey Palmer was recalled from his Blackburn Rovers loan.
Tony Mowbray has suggested Blackburn Rovers won’t miss the absence of Kasey Palmer after he was recalled by parent club Chelsea before citing Joe Rothwell as a potential replacement, Lancashire Telegraph report.
“Kasey was a loan player, he filled a position, but if we didn’t replace him, I don’t think it would be an issue. Kasey was brought in in case Bradley (Dack) picked up an injury. He prefers to play as a 10, behind the striker, but he never really forced his way beyond Bradley,” Mowbray explained.
“We’ve talked about the likes of Joe Rothwell, who does amazingly well in training, sometimes you can’t get the ball off him when he runs with that right foot. Sometimes they need opportunities.”
Blackburn signed Palmer on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea in the summer, but the attacking midfielder only managed 10 starts with the majority of those in a more unfamiliar wide role.
The Blues evidently felt his loan at Ewood Park wasn’t going to plan as he was recalled, and now Palmer has since joined fellow Championship side Bristol City on loan until the end of the season.
Rovers have one of the best Championship players in Bradley Dack playing the number 10 role, linking up with Danny Graham in attack with the likes of Adam Armstrong and Harrison Reed filling in wide roles.
Rothwell, 24, has made just five starts for Blackburn this term but Palmer’s departure could provide him with more opportunities to feature should Dack pick up an injury or suspension.
Mowbray’s comments suggest Rothwell could step up rather than dipping into the market again, though the former Manchester United academy product must show more consistency when given the chance.
