Tony Mowbray admits Southampton’s Harrison Reed may have played his last game for Blackburn

Southampton’s Harrison Reed spent the season on loan at Blackburn Rovers.

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has told reporters how Harrison Reed has returned to Southampton following an injury and admits he is unsure he will return to Ewood Park, the Lancashire Telegraph reports.

“Reedy is going to be missing. He’s going back to Southampton at the end of this week for them to assess what they want to do with him,” Mowbray explained.

“Might he get the last game of the season? Maybe. He will go back to Southampton for them to assess it and then decide whether he’s coming back or start the rehabilitation programme there.”

Reed’s injury is said to have been caused by a long-range pass in training where he felt a click in his standing leg. It was deemed innocuous, but Mowbray also admits it was concerning.

The midfielder arrived at Ewood Park on a season-long loan deal from Southampton and has become a fan favourite at Blackburn, scoring three goals and grabbing five assists in 33 Championship appearances.

The 24-year-old told the club’s official website back in December how he was loving life at Rovers, and that Mowbray had given him the confidence and freedom to go out and perform.

Reed’s contract at Southampton expires in 2021 and it remains to be seen what plans the club have for him, with the Saints looking increasingly likely on preserving their Premier League status.

Since making his debut for the Saints, Reed has only featured 17 times for the south coast club.

Rovers would surely love to have him back at Ewood Park, but his impressive spells in the Championship at Norwich City and now at Blackburn may make signing him permanently a difficult task.
