According to a recent report in the German editorial Bild, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Cologne’s Leonardo Bittencourt this summer and it’s a deal which makes plenty of sense.

Following Spurs’ recent FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester United, the north London club have extended their run to 10 consecutive seasons without landing any silverware.

Mauricio Pochettino has done a fabulous job since becoming the club’s manager, but to challenge the likes of Manchester City, United and Liverpool, the club needs to strengthen the squad.

Recent reports have heavily linked them with a move for Bittencourt, and here we list three key reasons why a deal for the German international is ultimately a no-brainer.

Versatility:

Bittencourt is capable of laying anywhere in any of the attacking roles, meaning he would be perfect to add competition to the likes of Heung-Min Son, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli who operate behind Harry Kane.

The 24-year-old is featured mainly as a left sided attacking midfielder for Cologne, but despite his attacking intentions, he is also adept at tracking back, working hard out of possession and contributing defensively.

Spurs tend to struggle with a lack of options off the bench, and it’s an area Pochettino must rectify this summer as he needs more game-changers in the squad capable of making that telling difference.

Recent form:

With three goals and two assists in his last four games, Bittencourt is one of the most in-form players currently in the Bundesliga and what’s more impressive is he’s shining at a struggling club.

Cologne are in real danger of going down this season as they languish at the bottom of the table, yet in Bittencourt they have a former German U21 international capable of playing for a top four club.

Price-tag:

The biggest incentive for Spurs to sign the player this summer though is his price-tag, as a Cologne relegation activates a release clause allowing the player to walk away for a paltry fee of around £7 million.

Bittencourt could be one of the bargains of the summer and considering his age he no doubt has plenty of potential to reach an even higher level when surrounded by better players.
