Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is the latest player involved in contract discussions.

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has told reporters that he hasn’t heard anything regarding a new deal since initial talks began, The Sun report.

Brendan Rodgers has enough on his plate regarding star players Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson, who have both so far failed to agree new deals at the club, as per The Express.

And now another player has spoken out over his contract situation, Skrtel telling the press that initial talks have gone quiet and he is hopeful the situation can be sorted this coming summer.

“There was contact a few months ago. But at the moment I am focusing on my game and at the end of the season we will see where we stand,” he explained.

Quizzed on whether talks had been delayed until the summer, Skrtel said. “No. I am focusing on my job and after the season, if they want, then we can talk.”

How important is Martin Skrtel to Liverpool?

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, the 30-year-old centre-back has arguably been the Reds’ most consistent defender this season as he comes out on top in three of the five key defensive categories.

He has produced more interceptions, effective clearances and aerial duel winners than his teammates and there is little coincidence as to why he has been the most selected defender this season.

The Slovakia international, similar to Sterling and Henderson, is an integral part of the Merseysiders’ squad and is at a key age in his career.

According to Transfermarkt.com, Skrtel’s deal at Anfield expires in the summer of 2016 meaning the Reds could face the prospect of potentially losing him on the cheap if a deal can’t be agreed.
