Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck has been called up to the England squad.
Arsenal fans have taken to social networking site Twitter to share their thoughts on what many feels is a bizarre decision to call up striker Danny Welbeck for the upcoming England friendlies.
The Three Lions are preparing for their World Cup campaign in Russia this summer with two friendlies against household names Holland and Italy – the latter to be played at Wembley on March 27.
Despite the duo surprisingly failing to reach the finals this summer, they will provide a stern test for England and it is a chance for boss Gareth Southgate to take a closer look at his potential World Cup squad.
That said, it has then come as a surprise to see Welbeck receive a call-up considering he has spent much of the campaign out on the side-lines with injury while his recent form has been average at best.
The former Manchester United man is no doubt an established Premier League striker, yet with only two goals since September he is hardly a player you would consider at the top of their game.
It is likely that England will take as many as four forwards this summer, and on current form the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jamie Vardy, Glenn Murray, Jesse Lingard, Charlie Austin and of course Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane are all surely better options.
With Kane’s injury, Glenn Murray being too old at 34 and Lingard a potential midfield or wide option, there is space for another striker, but does Welbeck really deserve his place ahead of say Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson?
Arsenal fans reacting to the news via Twitter are not convinced, and many feel his inclusion based on reputation over current form is an indication of why England may struggle to make an impact this summer.
