All the latest Sunderland transfer news including Jermain Defoe and Nantes’ Papy Djilobodji.

According to a report in the Mirror, Sunderland lead the race for Nantes defender Papy Djilobodji.

Following their disastrous start to the new campaign in which seven goals have been concded, Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat has seemingly stepped up his search for a new defender.

Nantes centre-back Djilobodji has been sounded out, with the £5 million-rated star seemingly up for sale after the player entered the final 12 months of his contract with no signs of an extension in sight.

West Bromwich Albion are also said to be keen, but according to the report the Black Cats lead the way with his UK representative Chris Nathaniel confirming his client’s desire to play in England.

“Papy has been doing wonders in France and he now he wants to try his luck in England,” his agent said.

In other news, a separate report in the Mirror claims striker Jermain Defoe is looking to leave the club only seven months after arriving at the Stadium of Light.

The England striker traded MLS side Toronto for a return to the Premier League with Sunderland last January but he is said to be discontent in the North East and wants a move down south.

The 32-year-old’s impact is on the wane but his loss would still be a blow to Advocaat’s men considering how light they are upfront following the recent sale of Connor Wickham to Crystal Palace.

The list of southern clubs interested in Defoe might not be particularly high, but if the striker is prepared to drop down to the Championship, he could find himself plenty of potential suitors.
