Sunderland are on the lookout for a new manager but one candidate is not too popular.
Sunderland fans have taken to social media site Twitter to vent their disappointment at former player Alex Rae emerging as one of the bookies’ favourites for the vacant managerial position.
The Black Cats are on the lookout for a new manager after deciding to part ways with Chris Coleman following their unacceptable relegation from the Championship to League One.
Chris Wilder was originally cited as a potential appointment, yet the Sheffield United boss has ended speculation and committed his future to the Yorkshire club by signing a new deal at Bramall Lane.
It leaves Sunderland short on potential standout options and among those heading the list is former player Alex Rae, who is listed just behind St. Mirren manager Jack Ross according to Odds Checker.
The former Wolverhampton Wanderers man had a successful spell as a player at the Stadium of Light, making over 100 league appearances and building a rapport with the club’s supporters.
But as far as his managerial record goes, the 48-year-old has only had brief spells at Dundee and St. Mirren in his native Scotland where he holds an average win rate at just over 40%.
Rae would no doubt be a big gamble for Sunderland, but their current situation regarding the proposed takeover and their status in League One means they do not quite have the same pull as they did 12 months ago.
The Chronicle list him as among the favourites, although fans feel his lack of experience should rule him out with many suggesting he joins the club as a coach instead than taking over the top job.
