Stoke City’s Charlie Adam was critical of Xherdan Shaqiri following relegation.

Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri has responded to Charlie Adam’s criticism of him by claiming the Stoke City midfielder is jealous he managed to secure an immediate return to the Premier League, the London Evening Standard report.

“I think it’s just frustration maybe or jealousy because I had a good move,” the Reds ace explained.

“I know what he [Charlie Adam] said was totally wrong because at that time I played there – especially when times were hard – I was there and I was scoring a lot of goals.”

“I was one of the only ones who helped the team with goals in difficult games and he was that guy who took the red card in [important] league games (against Everton) and missed a penalty (against Brighton).”

Shaqiri’s comments come in response to Adam claiming the Switzerland international went missing in the key moments during Stoke’s battle against relegation and was allowed to get away with certain things.

The Potters saw their ten-year stay in the Premier League end as they suffered relegation to the Championship under the guidance of Paul Lambert after former boss Mark Hughes was dismissed.

Shaqiri wasn’t the only big-name in the Stoke squad with former Barcelona duo Bojan and Ibrahim Afellay on their books, but the Swiss playmaker was often their go-to man to provide that telling spark.

The 26-year-old scored eight goals and grabbed seven assists for Stoke last term – by far their most productive player and among the best individual seasons of his career to date.

Shaqiri’s performances last term in a poor side were impressive enough to prompt Liverpool to sign him in the summer, but his switch to Anfield for some reason or another saw criticism from his former teammate Adam.

Adam remains on the books at the Bet365 Stadium but has barely featured so far under new boss Gary Rowett as the Potters struggle to get going in the Championship with just two wins from nine games.
