Stephen Warnock sends heartfelt message to Liverpool after announcing summer retirement

Burton Albion’s Stephen Warnock came through the youth academy at Liverpool.

As he announced his decision to retire this summer, Burton Albion‘s Stephen Warnock extended his gratitude to the staff at Liverpool, and says he was very proud to pull on the red jersey, burtonalbionfc.co.uk report.

The fullback came through the youth ranks at Liverpool and spent five years as a senior at the club, making 40 Premier League appearances and bagging a 2005 Super Cup winners medal.

Injuries marred his progress at Anfield, but Liverpool were patient with him, and he soon became a solid member of the first-team squad before moving to Blackburn Rovers in January 2007.

Speaking to Burton’s official website, the now 36-year-old has decided to hang up his boots before going on to share some kind words for his former club Liverpool.

“It’s every players hardest moment in football…to hang up their boots! It’s not been an easy decision but this season will be my last as a professional,” Warnock stated.

“I’d like to thank the staff at Liverpool FC, especially Steve Heighway, Dave Shannon and Hughie McCauley for their belief in me especially after my injuries.”

“Two of my dreams came true, to pull on the famous red jersey of Liverpool and to also wear the white of England. I’m lucky to have represented & captained some of the biggest clubs in England and this I am very proud of. Thank you to all the fans of the clubs I represented.”

Warnock earned two caps for England and obtained a spot in the Three Lions’ 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup under Fabio Capello, providing competition for regular left-back Ashley Cole.

The former Liverpool man also had permanent spells at Aston Villa, Leeds United, Derby County and Wigan Athletic, but it was his spell at Ewood Park where he arguably enjoyed the best football of his career.

Warnock has made over 500 appearances in all competitions throughout his 16 years as a senior professional – an incredible number of games considering his early injury troubles.
