Tottenham should consider summer swoop for Barcelona’s Lucas Digne

Tottenham Hotspur could improve in the left-back area this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur will be keen to improve their first XI this summer and they could do that by bringing in Barcelona left-back Lucas Digne, who is reportedly available for a mere £15 million.

A report in German publication Kicker claims Bayern Munich are interested in signing the France international, although a move to the Bundesliga champions will probably see the player face the same problems.

At Barcelona he has been restricted to a bit-part role, filling in for Jordi Alba in cup games and against weakened opposition, and he will probably find a similar situation in Munich behind David Alaba.

Tottenham, however, have scope to sign a better left-back this summer, with Ben Davies a solid but uninspiring option while there are question marks over Danny Rose’s future at the club.

Digne could be an improvement on both, and at £15 million and seemingly on back-up wages at Barca, he would be well within Spurs’ budget, while the player himself would probably relish regular first-team opportunities.

The 24-year-old only made eight La Liga starts for the Catalan club this past season, and his lack of appearances has seen him miss out on a spot in France’s 23-man squad for the upcoming World Cup.

Digne would be wise to seek an exit to a club where he is likely to feature regularly, and his playing style is tailor-made for Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and his high-pressing style.

The former Paris Saint-Germain ace has an abundance of energy and loves to drive forward, supporting the attack and assisting the strikers via crosses from the byline.

He could be an ideal player to link up with the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen on the overlap, while Harry Kane would certainly benefit greatly by the Frenchman’s excellent crossing ability.

With plenty of time on his side and Kicker reporting his availability at a low price, it is an opportunity Tottenham should grasp with both hands as the north London club look to go one better and finally end their silverware drought.
