Sheffield Wednesday’s Lucas Joao has signed a new contract.

Sheffield Wednesday forward Lucas Joao has signed a new contract at the club, committing his future to the Owls until the summer of 2021 according to the club’s official website.

The Owls announced on Twitter there would be some positive news ahead, and it emerged that the Portuguese ace has signed a new deal with his previous contract set to expire in 12 months’ time.

Joao’s new extension is a welcome sign following a tough summer where the Owls were placed under a transfer embargo and seemingly had to look to get players out the door in order to balance the books.

But now with the club out of the embargo, boss Jos Luhukay can concentrate on moving the team forward with supporters imploring those involved to now tie down Barry Bannan to a long-term contract.

Bannan’s current deal at Hillsborough expires next summer and losing him on a free would be a real disappointment for Owls fans considering the player’s ability and loyalty to the cause.

The former Aston Villa man told the Sheffield Star earlier this summer how he would like to end his career at the Yorkshire club, citing how much they have done for him.

“The club has been unbelievable for me,” said Bannan.

“It was a big time in my career when I came here because I needed to play football, having been at clubs where I was in and out of the team.”

“I’ve made it clear I want to finish my career here if I can. I love it here. I’m just focused on doing what’s right for me and doing what’s right for the club. I want to play football and stay at this club.”

Bannan has been an influential figure for Wednesday, playing a key role in the club’s successive playoff finishes while his absence through injury last term was duly noted as the teams struggle for form.

At 28, the Scotland international still has a good number of years left at the top of his game and for a player who doesn’t rely on pace, he could well continue well into his thirties at a solid level.
