Everton will be keen to push for a top six spot this season.

Some Everton fans and supporters of rival clubs have responded to Phil Neville on Twitter after the former Manchester United man claimed the Toffees could finish in the top six in the Premier League this term.

“This year I think we’ve signed good players,” Neville told BBC Five Live Sport.

“The style that we’re playing is far better than the style that they played in the last 12 months. I think this could be the season where they could be that team that is pushing the top six. They’ve spent a lot of money over the last two years, but I think this could be their year.”

If any club is going to break into the current top six then Everton seem the most likely, with Marco Silva’s men spending over £80 million this summer and seriously strengthening the defence.

Barcelona duo Lucas Digne and Andre Gomes have arrived at Goodison Park, while Kurt Zouma has joined from Chelsea on loan and a whopping fee rising to £50 million (the BBC) was spent on Richarlison from Watford.

But having said all that, both Everton fans and rival supporters responding to Neville’s comments feel it’s probably too soon for the Merseyside club and more wishful thinking on his part.

Could Everton finish in the top six?

While Watford, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace have all impressed in their opening two games of the season, if any club is likely to break into the Premier League’s top six then Everton would be the safer bet.

Having said that, it seems Arsenal are the only likely contenders Everton can consider replacing right now and it remains to be seen how much of an impact new boss Unai Emery has with the Gunners.

Arsenal no doubt boasts a stronger squad than the Toffees, but a failure to initially get on board with Emery’s ideas could prompt a slow start and allow another club to really challenge them this term.

The blue half of Liverpool should, however, just focus on their own progress and regardless of where they finish, see a season of decent football and winning more than they lose as a step n the right direction.
