Derby County have been linked with Hearts star John Souttar.
According to a report in the Scottish Sun, Derby County are looking to lure Hearts defender John Souttar to Pride Park this summer with a bid in the region of £1 million suggested.
The Rams are currently in sixth spot in the Championship table with two games remaining but, despite the possibility of promotion, not every supporter has been a big fan of boss Gary Rowett this season.
The football has largely been a frustrating watch, as results have taken centre stage over performance or style of play, while the size and average age of the squad is a big concern.
Upon his arrival at the back end of last season, Rowett spoke of building a young, hungry squad at Pride Park and suggested that a fast-paced, aggressive style of football was the goal for the subsequent campaign.
But Derby’s transfers last summer seemed to contradict Rowett’s comments, what with Tom Huddlestone, Joe Ledley and Curtis Davies arriving while Cameron Jerome joined from Norwich City in January.
The four additions, all over 30, have pushed the average age of the squad right up and with David Nugent, Scott Carson, Richard Keogh and Craig Forsyth also regulars, Derby now have one of the oldest team in the league.
Rowett has come in for plenty of stick for his perceived short-term approach, and a failure to secure promotion via the play-offs may leave plenty questioning whether he deserves to remain in charge beyond the season.
It is difficult to get on board when there is no clear evidence of a long-term plan in place, therefore reports of Derby tracking one of the brightest sparks north of the border is certainly a step in the right direction.
Souttar, 21, has been a rock at the back for Hearts this season and his presence has seen the club remain undefeated at home since returning to their familiar Tynecastle Stadium.
Derby have had previous success with players from the Scottish Premiership, with Craig Bryson becoming a fans favourite and Johnny Russell proving great value for money before his switch to the MLS.
Souttar has plenty of potential, and should Derby bring him in he could be the perfect foil alongside Keogh and Davies in Rowett’s new formation consisting of playing three central defenders.
He’s a player who represents a long-term vision, and he’s the sort of under-the-radar signing which would help endear Rowett to those supporters questioning whether the club can take the next step under his guidance.
