Sheffield Wednesday beat Ipswich Town 2-1 at Hillsborough Saturday.
Sheffield Wednesday youngster Jordan Thorniley has sent supporters a message on Twitter, acknowledging how the Hillsborough crowd gave his side an extra boost as they beat Ipswich Town 2-1 Saturday.
The Owls didn’t get off to the best of starts this season, picking up just one point in their opening three games of the Championship campaign, which prompted fans to show their frustration. But two successive home wins, coupled with a lift on their transfer embargo allowing them to make some loan signings ahead of the August 31 deadline, has helped change the mood.
Lucas Joao was the hero against the Tractor Boys, as he scored two goals in what was a fairly even contest. But arguably the biggest bright spark for the hosts was youngster Thorniley making his mark.
The former Everton youth academy player was full of praise for his side, as he underlined their first-class attitude and work rate, while he also had a special mention for the crowd.
Thorniley, 21, joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2016 after being released from Everton, and his inclusion in the first-team set up over the past few weeks has largely come as a result of a shortage of senior defenders. Glenn Loovens and Frederico Venancio both departed the club in the summer, leaving Wednesday light in defence.
But Thorniley, capable of playing both left-back and in the middle, has given Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay food for thought ahead of the deadline, as his latest display may suggest he is ready for regular first-team action.
Alongside Tom Lees, Thorniley racked up an impressive ten clearances (Whoscored) – the most of any player on the pitch, and five more than any of his Wednesday teammates.
