Sheffield Wednesday’s Kieren Westwood has been linked with Stoke City.

According to a report in the Sheffield Star, Stoke City are keen on signing Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Kieren Westwood, as they look to replace Lee Grant who joined Manchester United.
The Potters may still hold on to prized asset and number one Jack Butland, but it seems boss Gary Rowett is still looking to bulk up that area – and has identified Owls ace Westwood as an ideal option.
While losing your number one goalkeeper isn’t ideal, for Sheffield Wednesday they would be doing smart business if they could get a decent fee for him.
The 33-year-old only has one year remaining on his current deal at Hillsborough, and considering his age and status at the club, it’s presumed the Irishman is among the club’s highest earners.
The report claims the club must downsize further and reduce the wage bill as they look to comply with Financial Fair Play rules – a situation which has come about due to allegedly overspending in their bid for promotion.
Westwood is an obvious candidate to let go, not just because of his age, but because he is easily replaceable with both Joe Wildsmith and Cameron Dawson waiting in the wings and more than capable of playing at Championship level.

Sheffield Wednesday’s back-up goalkeepers, aged 22 and 23, both featured last season and they displayed enough ability and confidence to warrant an opportunity to try for a regular place in the starting eleven.
