Sheffield Wednesday lost 2-1 at Swansea City on Saturday.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay told reporters how his side’s inept defending at Swansea City has made him angry following the Owls’ 2-1 defeat in Wales, the Sheffield Star reports.
“We did not have discipline or 100 per cent focus to hold the 1-0. Then we gave everything away. The first goal (from Swansea) is not acceptable. I’m so angry that there is no profit from what we’re doing. But this isn’t the first time that we gave the goals away. I’m so angry that this has happened (again),” Luhukay explained.
Sheffield Wednesday took the lead against Swansea through Marco Matias’s second-half strike, but two goals in as many minutes completed a turnaround for the hosts and left the Owls staring at another away defeat.
The Owls have now lost four of their last five away games, and the 0-0 draw at rivals Sheffield United over a month ago was their only clean sheet on the road this season.
Luhukay had his hands tied during the summer transfer window, as the Yorkshire club were subject to a transfer embargo, but the defending from his side this season has still raised questions.
No team has conceded more league goals than Wednesday this term, with their 40 conceded in 22 games a record of almost two per game. Their two clean sheets is also the joint-worst record in the league.
It would be easy to point at the goalkeeper or defence for Sheffield Wednesday’s poor defensive record, but as a team, they’ve struggled.
January can’t come quick enough for the Owls, as they desperately need to bolster their squad – although how much they will be able to spend may depend on getting some of their higher earners out the door first.
