Sheffield United have been linked with Bournemouth’s Jermain Defoe.

According to a recent report in the Sun, Sheffield United are considering a move for Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe in the January transfer window as the Blades look to bolster their promotion bid.

But moving for the 36-year-old striker wouldn’t significantly improve them with Billy Sharp, Leon Clarke, David McGoldrick and Conor Washington all younger, more mobile and capable of doing a job upfront.

Where United are lacking is creativity behind their strikers, and nullifying the likes of John Fleck, Oliver Norwood and Mark Duffy as Leeds United did last weekend leaves them lacking.

Instead of adding a new striker to their ranks, Chris Wilder ought to be focusing on adding greater strength in midfield and a better version of Mark Duffy with the 33-year-old’s influence on the decline.

Bournemouth are performing well in the Premier League, but one player who has barely featured this term and must be looking at his own position in the club is former Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe.

The attack-minded youngster made 22 Premier League starts last term, but this season he has made just one league start with former Sheffield United ace David Brooks taking his place in the side.

While the Cherries will no doubt want to keep him long-term after joining for a then club record £15 million fee in 2016 (BBC), they could benefit by allowing him to move out on loan and gaining regular first-team football.

And Ibe has dropped down to the Championship before, enjoying an excellent spell at Derby County in the 2014/15 campaign, scoring five goals in 13 starts, and with the Blades pushing for promotion it could be the sort of challenge Ibe needs to get his career back on track.
