West Ham United lost 4-2 at West Bromwich Albion this weekend.
Former striker Alan Shearer told BBC’s Match of the Day on Saturday night that West Ham United’s defensive woes go back to the end of the previous campaign.
The Hammers suffered a second straight 4-2 defeat as they followed up their loss at home to Watford with another disappointing result against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Saturday.
In both games the defending from Slaven Bilic’s side has been dreadful, and Shearer believes their defensive frailty is not a problem that has just appeared this season.
“I know they’ve got injuries, and two new fullbacks into their team, but this isn’t a problem which has just happened this season it started at the end of last season,” Shearer explained on BBC Match of the Day.
“It was like watching an under 10s team it was so bad,” he added, watching the goals back against West Brom. “It’s incredible, so embarrassing it’s untrue. I’ve never seen defending like that for a long, long time.”
West Ham were fighting for a top four spot towards the end of last season, yet the goal scoring abilities of Dimitri Payet, Andy Carroll and even Mark Noble started to paper over some pretty big cracks.
In the final ten games of the 2015/16 Premier League season, Bilic’s men conceded a whopping 20 goals which was six more than Norwich City and eight more than fellow relegated side Newcastle United.
The East London club spent much of the summer searching for that elusive world class striker, yet perhaps they should have instead focused on defensive-minded players especially through the spine of the team.
