Derby County need just a point to reach the Championship play-offs.
Derby County goalkeeper Scott Carson has taken to social networking site Twitter to share his thoughts on the team’s current position, as the Championship campaign approaches its final game.
Following the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, Gary Rowett’s side find themselves in sixth position, knowing that a point at home to Barnsley next weekend will see them reach the play-offs by virtue of their superior goal difference.
Only Preston North End can pip Derby to sixth spot, and even their task is difficult as they must beat relegation-threatened Burton Albion and hope for the Rams to lose to clinch the final play-off position.
It has been a topsy-turvy season for Derby, as most supporters would have accepted a top six spot last summer, but their position over the Christmas period means that to be in such a position now is slightly disappointing.
As Scott Carson alluded to, the East Midlands club were in second spot heading in to February but a run of just four league wins in their last 17 games means they were in danger of missing out on the play-offs altogether.
Luckily for Derby, a midweek win over Cardiff City and a point at Villa Park leaves them in a commanding position ahead of the season finale, and they largely have Carson to thank for keeping their promotion hopes alive.
While Matej Vydra has scored 20 league goals this term and defender Curtis Davies has been outstanding at the back, Carson has been a rock between the sticks this season and among the Championship’s top performers.
The former West Bromwich Albion man is strong contender for the club’s Player of the Year award, and many fans believe the team only find themselves in the promotion hunt as a result of his excellent displays.
