Celtic defeated Rangers 4-0 at Hampden Park.
Celtic skipper Scott Brown says Rangers won’t be cheering tonight and that his side knew all they had to do was turn up to win the game in the aftermath of their 4-0 victory, the BBC report.
Rangers players were said to have cheered when they drew Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final, but their decision to do so has ultimately come back to haunt them following a one-sided encounter.
Goals from Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor, Moussa Dembele and Olivier Ntcham gave the Hoops a resounding victory in a game which they fully dominated against a lacklustre Rangers side from start to finish.
Speaking to reporters at the full-time whistle, skipper Brown couldn’t help but pile on Rangers’ misery by suggesting they won’t be doing any cheering tonight before lauding his own team’s display.
“They can cheer as much as they want, I don’t think they’ll be cheering tonight. We knew from start to finish we were going to dominate the game. We just knew as soon as we turned up that we’d win it,” he explained.
Brown was competent throughout the encounter but in truth he along with Celtic’s back four were barely tested as Rangers opted to sit back, allow the Hoops time on the ball and hit direct balls forward.
The tactic evidently didn’t work for Graeme Murty’s men – it was set up to fail as a reluctance to put any pressure on the ball with Celtic in possession meant they were relying on a defensive masterclass from the back four.
Ultimately, Rangers’ back four are error-prone and that showed with young Ross McCrorie easily turned by Rogic for the first goal followed by a Russell Martin error playing a crucial role in Celtic’s second.
McCrorie’s dismissal for a tug on Dembele following a poor back-pass summed up Rangers’ defensive display, and from the resulting spot-kick, Celtic were home and dry as they move closer to a successive treble.
