Charly Musonda is to leave Celtic this summer.
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers says he couldn’t guarantee Charly Musonda regular first-team football and as a result they have decided to end his loan spell from Chelsea early, the Scottish Sun report.
The Belgium U21 international joined the Hoops from the Blues on an 18-month loan spell in January – a move which was widely praised by the Celtic supporters as they were excited over his potential.
Musonda, however, has struggled for game-time and when given brief opportunities by Rodgers, he has ultimately failed to make much of an impression despite his best intentions.
Speaking to reporters regarding the situation, Rodgers explains how both parties have decided to cut Musonda’s loan spell short as the former Liverpool boss simply couldn’t guarantee him games at Celtic Park.
“He was a joy to work with, a really good boy, wanted to learn and he’s now at an age where he needs to play week in, week out, and, unfortunately, I couldn’t promise him that,” Rodgers told the Scottish Sun.
The Chelsea attacker has bags of potential but at Celtic he faced heavy competition for places in wide areas, mainly from the likes of Scott Sinclair, Callum McGregor, Odsonne Edouard and James Forrest.
Musonda made just a handful of appearances for the Hoops, with his last start coming in the disappointing 0-0 Scottish Premiership stalemate at home to St Johnstone.
With plenty of potential, the former Anderlecht youngster will no doubt find regular football on loan at another club next season and he can’t allow his lack of opportunities at Celtic to dent his confidence.
As for Rodgers, with Musonda leaving there is scope to bring in another wide man this summer to bulk up his squad, though he may struggle to convince Chelsea of loaning him any more players in the coming seasons.
