Reading have appointed Jose Gomes as the club’s new manager. He arrives from Portuguese outfit Rio Ave.
Reading supporters have taken to Twitter to comment on the club’s official announcement that Jose Gomes is to become the club’s new manager.
The Portuguese boss takes over the reigns at the Madejski Stadium following the dismissal of Paul Clement. He has a big job on his hands with the Royals just above the Championship relegation zone.
Gomes has no experience of English football, but has been part of the coaching staff at Porto and Benfica, and he leaves Rio Ave in sixth position in the Portuguese top-flight.
Taking to Twitter, several Reading supporters feel it is a risky move by the Berkshire club to take on a manager unproven in English football.
Gomes, 48, was in attendance during Reading’s 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough and, despite the loss, he will have seen signs of potential improvement – plus he will know that there are a number of talented youngsters coming through. The likes of Josh Sims (21), Andy Rinomhota (21), Omar Richards (20), Gabriel Osho (20) and Tom McIntyre (20) are all on the verge of breaking through and have featured at some point during the season.
Reading’s defeat to Boro extends their win-less run to seven games, and they remain outside the bottom three just on goal difference, following Millwall’s 1-0 defeat at Stoke City.
Gomes’s first game in charge is against Millwall at the Den on Boxing Day, while his first home game comes against Swansea City on New Year’s Day.
