Wigan Athletic’s Will Grigg has been linked with Sunderland.
According to a report in the Wigan Post, Wigan Athletic are bracing themselves for a fifth bid from Sunderland for forward Will Grigg.
The Latics have reportedly already turned down four offers from the Black Cats, but the League One promotion challengers seemingly haven’t given up as they eye a replacement for Josh Maja.
Maja lead Sunderland’s scoring charts with 15 League One goals this term, and his performances alerted the attentions of French side Bordeaux who completed a £3.5 million deal for him last week.
Sunderland now have the task of replacing Maja as they seek to maintain their promotion push back to the Championship, and Wigan’s Grigg has seemingly been chosen as manager Jack Ross’s top target.
But Wigan boss Paul Cook evidently does not want to lose the Northern Ireland international, with the 27-year-old scoring four goals and grabbing one assist in ten Championship starts this season.
Grigg will be key to Wigan’s survival chances come the end of the season, and he has proven his ability in front of goal having previously netted 44 goals in 83 League One games for the Latics.
The report goes on to say that Cook is aware that every player has a price, but the Lancashire club may not be willing to risk their Championship status by allowing him to leave ahead of the upcoming transfer deadline.
Grigg’s current contract at Wigan expires in the summer of 2020, therefore there is no obligation for Paul Cook’s side to consider an offer they deem below his true valuation to the club.
