West Ham United have been linked With Chelsea’s Gary Cahill.
According to a report in the Mirror, West Ham United are considering a January swoop for Chelsea’s out of favour centre-back Gary Cahill.
The report claims Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini has the support of the board to strengthen again in January, and Chelsea’s Cahill has been cited as a target as the club look to bolster their defence.
West Ham backed the Chilean boss heavily in the summer, spending big as the likes of Issa Diop, Andriy Yarmolenko and Felipe Anderson arrived in east London.
But despite the heavy outlay, the east Londoners have made a mixed start to the campaign with victories over Everton and Manchester United overshadowed by defeats to Brighton, Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
With 13 Premier League goals conceded in eight games, adding experience at the back makes sense for West Ham, and former England international Cahill would represent a sound option.
With the 32-year-old’s contract set to expire next summer, Chelsea may be happy to let him go for a knock-down price in January, and Cahil does seem willing to move on from Stamford Bridge.
Several clubs have been linked with Cahill over the past few weeks such as Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa (The Sun), while Southampton are another said to have an interest in the player (the Mirror).
West Ham, however, appear the most likely of the clubs linked to be able to afford Cahil’s current weekly wages of reportedly £130,000 per week (Spotrac).
